As well as having a thriving legal community, Bristol boasts a wide range of cultural and social events for all tastes. Why not drag yourself away from your desk to go to some of these over the next month?
In the theatre, February sees the opening of the 2012 Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory season. The bard’s masterpiece “King Lear”, starring John Shrapnel, starts from the 9th February and promises to be an unmissable interpretation – see www.tobaccofactorytheatre.com/ . Highlight this month at the Bristol Hippodrome has to be the English National Ballet’s production of “Strictly Gershwin”, described as a dazzling celebration of George Gershwin and the sparkling age of Hollywood music and dance. Also playing in February is the classic musical “Blood Brothers” ensuing there won’t be a dry eye in the auditorium. Details of both of these productions can be found at www.bristolhippodrome.org.uk If you prefer to go over to Bath, the Theatre Royal (www.theatreroyal.org.uk) offers “Avenue Q” and “Calendar Girls” as well as the stage version of “The King’s Speech”.
Conoisseurs of art should ensure they head over to the Royal West of England Academy where for twelve months, “Charity”, Damien Hirst’s twenty-two foot high painted bronze statue, stands on the RWA’s balcony as a monumental and epic comment on social injustice. Over at Bristol’s City Museum the exhibition is the Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year show. The Arnolfini continues its “Museum Show”, a show devoted to museums created by artists. Meanwhile, Spike Island has a show by modern artist, Haroon Mirza, whose show is said to fuse sound and image into a complex sensory experience.
A new art space is opened at the Motorcycle Showroom in Stokes Croft and the opening show takes place on February 10th and 11th. Rising young Bristol artist, Joseph Ridgeon installs his latest outing juxtaposing domestic appliances in unusual settings in a show called “Benross” (http://josephridgeon.tumblr.com/).
