A Western Circuit Conference -Towards a more Diverse Judiciary – 27th January 2022 16:30 – 18:00

Please find attached an invitation to a Western Circuit Conference, together with a promotional flyer.  The core theme of this conference is about moving towards a more diverse Judiciary and will be led by the Presiding and Family Liaison Division Judges of the Western Circuit.

The invitation is open to lawyers, lecturers and academics in your organisation/university who may be considering a career as a Judge, or who wish to find out more information about a role within the Judiciary.  Further options for joining this meeting are set out below.

By way of background the conference will cover the following:

  • Opening remarks by Mr Justice Garnham, Presiding Judge of the Western Circuit and District Judge Woodburn.
  • Brief examples by way of three role plays of the sorts of issues that a Judge might have to decide in criminal, family and civil cases.  The roles will be played by Mrs Justice Roberts – Family Division Liaison Judge, His Honour Judge Wildbood QC, His Honour Judge Blair QC, Her Honour Judge Morris, His Honour Judge Mitchell and District Judge Woodburn.
  • A day in the life of a Tribunal Judge by Regional Employment Judge Pirani.
  • A presentation by Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram CBE about why diversity in the Judiciary matters.
  • A presentation by a Judicial Appointments Commissioner about applying to be a Judge.
  • And then finally there will be a question and answer session – your opportunity to ask questions about becoming a Judge.
