Bristol Legal Awards
Event sustainability - what measures have we taken this year?

Over the last few years we have taken action to improve the sustainability of the Bristol Legal Awards, which is our biggest producer of carbon emissions over the year. As part of our own Net Zero journey we are looking at our emissions in detail and will be looking to see where we can make future savings. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have done to improve the sustainability of the event this year:
- Rebrand
- Further savings on suppliers around design, print, set etc. in future years.
- Print
- reduced print brochure from 1 per person to 4 per table
- reduced print brochure from 8 sided document to 2 sided - using QR code to link to new BLA website to host key event information
- printed on recycled paper
- all left-over print waste recycled
- Raffle tickets - removed year specific branding to allow us to use unsold tickets at future dinners and will print additional new tickets with different identifying numbers
- Menu
- seasonal, locally sourced where possible, inclusive menu.
- pre-order reduces food waste.
- venue provides accurate food data to record CO2 emissions
- Set
- recycle the backdrop - the canvas is cut up and goes to local children's group for art work projects
- Flowers
- reduced cut flower centre pieces by 50%
- seasonally sourced flowers grown sustainably
- introduced 50% live plants
- all flowers and plants are taken by guests to enjoy
- glass vases for cut flowers are hired and reused year on year
- Venue
- central location - accessible by foot, local transport
- Merchandise/ Goodie bags no longer allowed to reduce wastage
- Awards
- Glass Awards - UV printing is generally considered more sustainable and eco-friendly than most engraving methods, especially traditional ones. This is due to lower harmful emissions, reduced energy consumption, and minimal material waste in the UV printing process.
- Suppliers
- Locally based where possible to reduce transport footprint and keep money in local businesses
- Seeking supplier sustainability information to make informed choices
