October / November 2023 start

Guildhall Chambers is a leading UK Barristers’ set, based in the old legal quarter of historic and thriving central Bristol.  Our specialist team approach meets the needs of our clients and enables us to provide the best service provision across the legal sector.

As a result of the Employment and Discrimination team’s success, a rare opportunity arises for an enthusiastic and able candidate to join us as probationary tenant. We seek an individual who is committed to building a successful employment practice, ideally joining us in October / November 2023.  This probationary position will last for six months, following which an application for full tenancy may be made. Interviews are likely to be held in the week commencing 11th September 2023. This position is not funded. Interest-free loans are available at the discretion of Chambers.

The employment team is recognised by the legal directories as being one of the leading regional employment sets, with the team being ranked tier 1 on circuit by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.  The team’s work is sourced nationally and from highly rated law firms, as well as from the Government Legal Department, blue chip companies and charities, amongst others.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate intellectual ability, excellent communication/advocacy skills, and an ability to work under pressure as well as flexibility of thinking, sound judgement and good interpersonal skills.  Candidates should also demonstrate market awareness and commitment to specialist practice with the employment team.  With a busy workload, a ‘can do’ attitude is a must.

In addition to a supervisor, the probationary tenant will be offered a mentor from the team providing support and advice during this formative period of the candidate’s career.  The responsive and caring clerking team provides an additional source of support and guidance.

Applicants should send a CV and cover letter to caroline.evans@guildhallchambers.co.uk. The cover letter should demonstrate why you are applying for this opportunity and provide evidence of the skills identified in the recruitment criteria above.  If you would like to discuss this opportunity further, please email or telephone Julian Allsop, who will be happy to discuss this matter in confidence; julian.allsop@guildhallchambers.co.uk, Tel 0117 9309000.

Our selection process aims to be rigorous and fair, and to comply with the BSB Handbook and Pupillage Handbook, and the Bar Council’s Fair Recruitment Guide. We select candidates on ability and potential alone, with no regard to disability, gender, race, age, and sexual orientation or political affiliation.  Applications will be treated in confidence.

Deadline for applications: Midnight, Thursday 7th September 2023.
