The College of Legal Practice: SQE Spotlight – October 2025

The College of Legal Practice, CEO, Giles, was in the spotlight this month with his views on the SQE exams: "There is enough evidence now that the SQE is not meeting the outcomes we all, the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Kaplan Assessments included, envisaged for it and the pass rate on SQE1 is symptomatic of this. So lets have a close look and review how we deliver the examinations to meet the intended outcomes." You can read his views in more detail in The Lawyer. The low pass rate for January's SQE1 highlights the concerns raised by Giles, read The College's summary of July's SQE1 report.

Another important update published by the SRA a couple of weeks ago, was a report looking into the performance of apprentices in the SQE. It was so positive to see that despite apprentices coming from more socially mobile backgrounds, they performed better in the SQE exams, with an average of 68% pass rate in FLK1 or FLK2. This highlights the important of continuing apprentices schemes into 2026, despite funding challenges.

You can find out more about our new apprenticeship programmes in our Legal L&D webinar next Tuesday.
