Barcan+Kirby Launches New ‘Return to Law’ Programme to Support Women Re‑Entering the Legal Profession

Bristol law firm Barcan+Kirby has announced the launch of its new “Return to Law – Giving Opportunity, Gaining Talent” programme, an initiative designed to support women who have left the legal profession and want to return but are unsure where to begin. The launch coincides with International Women’s Day.

Addressing the Talent Gap in Law

Although women make up 62% of solicitors, they remain significantly underrepresented in senior positions, with only 32% progressing to full‑equity partner roles. Research shows that women often step away from the legal profession due to challenges such as insufficient work/life balance after having children, a lack of flexible working options, excessive workloads and caring responsibilities.

Managing Partner Anna Wilson, who has personally experienced many of these barriers, has played a key role in shaping the firm’s commitment to gender equity. Under her leadership, Barcan+Kirby has become an example of how women can thrive, progress and balance career ambitions with family life.

Anna commented “We are so excited to be launching this programme, which we hope will give talented women the confidence, support and practical insight they need to return to a career they once loved. Having navigated many of these challenges myself, I know how daunting it can feel to step back into the profession and I also know how much value returning women bring to our teams and our clients. This initiative is about opening doors, rebuilding confidence, and showing that there is absolutely a place for them in today’s legal world.”

A Tailored Programme to Support Women Back Into the Profession

The five‑day, in‑person programme will run from 15–19 June, 10am to 2.30pm, at the firm’s Bishopston office on Gloucester Road. Through a series of practical, cultural and confidence‑building workshops, participants will gain up‑to‑date insights into working in today’s legal landscape. Sessions cover topics including:

  • What working as a lawyer looks like in 2026
  • How work–life flexibility can be a game‑changer
  • Tackling imposter syndrome
  • Commercial awareness and professional visibility

The aim is to equip returning women with the skills, confidence and understanding they need to re‑enter the legal profession successfully.

Who Can Apply?

Barcan+Kirby welcomes applications from lawyers who have stepped away from the profession for any reason, whether to raise children, care for relatives or support a partner’s career. Applicants must be able to travel to the Gloucester Road office during the programme dates and attend between 10am and 2.30pm.
