Inspiring Women in Bristol Legal Profession: Anna Wilson, Barcan + Kirby

For International Women’s Day we asked members to nominate inspiration women for International Women’s Day.

Anna Wilson - Barcan+Kirby

Anna Wilson is a true champion of gender equity, transforming Barcan+Kirby into a workplace where women thrive. Through a decade of dedication, she has led a cultural shift, resulting in 85% of the firm’s 187 employees being women and 63% of employees working flexibly. She leads an HR function which includes policies that promote ambition, career progression, and flexible working. Under her leadership, the firm has evolved from 80% male partners to a 60% female partnership, with 70% of management roles now held by women.

Anna’s commitment extends beyond policy—she has fostered a culture of trust and support, proving that gender equity drives business success. By championing flexible working, Barcan+Kirby has seen consistent growth, record-breaking revenue, and exceptional employee retention. Women no longer have to choose between career and family; they can excel in both. Thanks to Anna’s vision, Barcan+Kirby stands as a model of inclusivity, proving that true workplace equality is not just possible—it’s powerful.

Burges Salmon has been an enthusiastic supporter of BLS for many years. BLS provides a valuable role in uniting and promoting the whole of the legal sector across Bristol to benefit both its members and the city. Three things to say about my experience of working with Bristol Law Society. Their central team, council members and general hangers-on are just about the nicest, most generous group of people working in the legal sector today. The numerous events, awards, socials and conferences I’ve had the pleasure to attend over the years have been, without exception, top quality and supremely organised. And, thirdly, they consistently exceed and challenge the boundaries of what lawyers might assume a regional Law Society will restrict activities to – from a hugely successful charitable school meals drive to corporate social responsibility and diversity campaigns to being joint architects and coordinators of the region’s unique Bristol+BathLegalTech group, which it has been my privilege to co-chair for the last five years.
