National rollout of Domestic Abuse Protection Orders (DAPOs) on 25 November 2026
DAPOs are a new protective order introduced under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. They are designed to provide stronger, more flexible protection for victims and survivors of domestic abuse and can be used across the Criminal, Civil and Family jurisdictions.
The orders will enable courts to impose a range of measures tailored to individual circumstances, including:
- Prohibitions to prevent perpetrators from engaging in abusive or harmful behaviour.
- Positive requirements, where appropriate, to address behaviours and reduce risk.
- Electronic monitoring as part of an order, making DAPOs the first protective order to incorporate this option.
HMCTS is working closely with national and regional partners to ensure readiness for implementation. This work includes:
- Updating operational guidance and processes.
- Engaging with stakeholders and partner agencies.
- Preparing courts and staff for the introduction of the new orders.
At this stage, no action is required. This communication is intended to provide early awareness of the upcoming changes. Further information, guidance and training materials will be shared as implementation approaches.
